History - The Police Transport Workshop (PTWS) Jammu was established vide Jammu & Kashmir Government Order No. 207 of 1979 dated 21.04.1979 in the year 1981. In the year 1997, the sanctioned strength of the Workshop was enhanced under re-organization scheme to cater the needs of the mobility of MT Fleet of Jammu and Kashmir Police.
At the initial stage working of the workshop was started at District Police Lines, Gulshan Ground, Jammu and the staff posted in the workshop commanded by different officer-in-charge’s, who were assisted by technocrats having expertise in the field of automobile engineering. The considerable members of Dy. Superintendent of Police having technical background assisted the officers-in-charge.
For efficient and effective policing, mobility plays a vital role in the performance of the State Police. Road worthy & mechanically reliable vehicles are always required for attending to Law & Order problems, VVIP duties & general police working besides, Anti-militancy Operations. This important task is efficiently handled by the PTWS Jammu.
In the year 1996, workshop was shifted to Armed Police Complex (APC) Channi Himmat, Jammu in December 1997, Government of Jammu & Kashmir enhanced the sanctioned strength of the workshop and for effective supervision an officer of the rank of Superintendent of Police, was sanctioned as Drawing and Disbursing Officer (DDO).

PTWS expanded very rapidly during the nineties-The PTWS becomes a branch of Technical service Headquarters and were commanded by Inspector General of Police, Services J&K. The maintenance of MT fleet of very District Units, Battalions and Police establishments established by J&K Police, is now the responsibility of PTWS Jammu to look-after the day-to-day maintenance as well as Major Repairs.
At Present the administration of the PTWS Jammu is looked after by administrative staff under the close supervision of Sh. Samir Rekhi-IPS , Sr. Superintendent of Police, PTWS Jammu w.e.f. February-2020 assisted by Sh. Kuljeet Singh, DySP (Admn) and Sh. Anil Kumar-DySP (Yard Officer). The main Branches of the administrative office are;
